Nearly three years after installation, a Hewitt Robins replacement screen continues to deliver reliable, high-capacity performance for one of the UK’s largest independent producers of sand and gravel, based in Kent.
Tasked with replacing an ageing screen, Hewitt Robins engineered a customer-focused solution designed to fit seamlessly into the existing footprint with minimal modifications to the plant infrastructure. Working closely with the customer, the team assessed the shortcomings of the previous machine and developed a replacement that not only improved performance, but also addressed day-to-day maintenance and access requirements.
As part of the redesign, Hewitt Robins introduced improved access between the decks to make maintenance easier and safer. A rubber curtain was also added to the rear of the machine to simplify upkeep and support more efficient operation. These practical enhancements reflect Hewitt Robins’ commitment to delivering equipment that is engineered not only for performance, but also for ease of use in demanding applications.
The final solution was a Hewitt Robins Extra Heavy Duty Double Deck Screen measuring 3.0m wide by 6.5m long, designed to process up to 700 tph of premium sea-dredged sand and gravel. The machine washes material across a 25mm top deck and 5mm bottom deck, using Tema Isenmann polyurethane modular media to provide long-term durability and reliable screening performance.
Given the abrasive and corrosive nature of the application, with constant exposure to sand, salt and water, the screen was fully metallised and finished with a three-layer polyurethane paint protection system to maximise resistance and service life. The machine was also fitted with a 2QV14 pod-type vibrator unit with self-synchronising capability, removing the need for timing gears, heavy eccentric shafts or beams.
Installation was completed by Thor Atkinson, who also supplied new chutes, underpans and additional steelwork. The full project was delivered on time and within budget.
Since commissioning, the screen has continued to perform exceptionally well, delivering the required output while maintaining efficiency in a challenging operating environment. The project stands as a strong example of Hewitt Robins’ ability to provide bespoke replacement equipment that improves reliability, maintenance access and long-term operational performance.
