Hewitt Robins Supply Made to Measure Screens to Holcim Quarry in New Zealand

Hewitt Robins has recently supplied six made-to-measure screens for the Holcim (New Zealand) Limited Hastings Quarry.

The Hastings Quarry has a long history of servicing and supplying the Hawkes Bay regional market with quality aggregate products. The quarry has been operating at its current site since the late 70s and early 80s and supplies the full range of quarry  products meeting all relevant technical standards and/or specific customer specifications.

Back in April 2020, during the Covid Pandemic, Hewitt Robins was contacted by Holcim to see if they could assist with a number of old vibrating screens that were in operation and that were beyond repair. After the first initial online teams meeting, the Hastings Quarry team supplied sketches of their existing vibrating screens with critical dimensions and supplied the application information for the replacement screen requirements so that Hewitt Robins could prepare a proposal together for customised replacement equipment. It was also discussed in detail about the current bottleneck and issues with the existing machines so that Hewitt Robins could design this out with their proposal.

Hewitt Robins put together their proposal for made-to-measure screens, which also incorporated Tema Isenmann Polyurethane WS85 modular system, which replaced traditional woven wire decks used at the Hastings Quarry. Hewitt Robins were awarded the contract and initially supplied 3 Inclined made-to-measure inclined screens back in 2021.

The 201-VS1 SCREEN was a 1.8 x 5.0 Single Deck Scalper, which was handling 200tph -100mm Greywacke material and scalping at 26mm. The 202-VS1 SCREEN was a 1.8 x 5.0 Triple Deck Wash screen and was handling 130tph of -26mm screening at 11mm top deck, 6mm middle deck and 4mm bottom deck.  The VS3 screen was a 1.25 x 3.0 Double Deck screen and was handling around 100tph of -26mm Greywacke and was washing at 6mm top deck and 4mm bottom deck.

All the screens supplied  were single shafted oil lubricated  and came complete with springs, spray bars, liners, rubber cross member protection, v-belt drives including motors and Tema Isenmann Polyurethane Media.

Hewitt Robins managed to increase the capacity of the screens on the same footprint by setting up the screens to suit the application and increasing the travel speeds of the material, which helped with higher efficiency screening.

The three screens were fully factory tested in the workshop with polyurethane media fitted and were shipped off to the Napier Port in New Zealand. The screens were installed by Innovate Engineering Solutions Ltd, appointed by Holcim and were soon up and running.

Due to the success of the three main screens at the Hastings Quarry, Hewitt Robins was then awarded the contract to replace the sites existing horizontal screens, each handling around 50tph.

Back in 2022, Hewitt Robins supplied three off 1.2 x 2.4 Horizontal screens, all supplied on pre-assembled screen frames for easy installation. Once again, all machines used Tema Isenmann WS85 modules, and all machines came complete with support frames, rubber crossmember protection and screen support frames.

The screens have now been in operation for over twelve months, and Quarry Manager Simon Hird commented:

‘’We started discussions with Hewitt Robins back in 2020 to try and help us with our screening problems at the Hastings Quarry. The screening equipment we had here was really old, it was difficult to obtain spare parts and it was really in need of replacement. I was already aware of Hewitt Robins from my time back in the U.K, and their proposals matched our needs which were extremely competitive and with a speedy turnaround. The made-to-measure solutions really made the installation of the screens easy, so the job was a success from start to finish.  With the new screens we have managed to achieve massive efficiency gains and the total production has increased by over 25%. Also, with the added wear protection and polyurethane decks on the screens, it really allows the maintenance to be carried out quickly and safely. It was a pleasure working with Hewitt Robins, who not only supplied us with more modern, reliable screens but they also improved the set-up of the screens, increasing throughput and efficiency on the same footprint.’’

Dan Stevenson – Hewitt Robins Sales Director, commented:-

‘’We were first contacted by Simon at Holcim in 2020. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to visit site to carry out a full survey; however, the online meetings were very successful and really helped shape the project. Over the past two years, we have managed to export six replacement screens to Holcim in New Zealand, which are all working well. It proves that with some basic information from our customers, we can supply customised made-to-measure replacement equipment in a timely manner. We have also proven that with the correct application information, we can design the machines to suit the quarry's needs and increase capacity and efficiency using the same footprint. This is another project which highlights Hewitt Robins knowledge, flexibility, and ability to respond to our customers' problems. We continue to be the number one vibrating equipment supplier in Europe, and this project highlights Hewitt Robins capabilities worldwide.
